Everyone is talking about TIkTok. And you & your brand are finally ready to dive in 2022. But where do you start? It’s so intimidating, it feels like so much work, and it’s so different than Instagram & Facebook. We totally understand.
But don’t let the overwhelm of getting started keep you from actually… well… getting started. If you are a small business owner or are launching a startup, TikTok is by far the most important social media platform for the next few years.
Here is a cheat sheet of how to get started on TikTok asap.
Tip 1: Pick a niche, decide on who your target is, and determine what success looks like for your business.
Your TikTok strategy will be absolutely useless if you don’t define for yourself who your target is. Are you targeting millennials? College kids? Moms? Business owners? Are there any specific traits about them that are likely to influence their behavior on social media? Once you have a good idea of who your target is and what they are into, then you can get to work on being the go-to person in your community for information about your brand.
What exactly is your business goal? Is it brand awareness, new subscribers/customers, customer retention? Depending on what you’re going for and the stage of your startup (are you in beta still?), different success metrics will apply.
Tip 2: For the first 2 months, plan to post 1-3 times per day. Yes, you heard that right, per day!
We know it sounds crazy! But in order to grow fast on TikTok, to up the potential of going viral, and to increase the odds of figuring out what works for your business, you have to post a lot in the beginning. But don’t worry, it won’t always be that way.
Posting consistently will help create better visibility for your brand (especially with hashtags!), which leads to visibility! And visibility begets visibility, begets visibility, as they say.
Tip 3: Participate & engage! Comment on other creators posts. Respond to the comments you get on your content. Don’t just post & bail.
This is the single most important & difficult part of getting community going. You will have to put in a lot of time and effort initially, which you may not be used to doing with other social platforms. But if community growth is your goal, it’s absolutely essential that you make a conscious effort to engage with other creators & commenters.
Don’t be afraid to respond or message people directly! Extra credit if you post a video response.
In conclusion, don’t get too in your head. TikTok can be intimidating, but just know that everyone is in the same boat you are. The most important thing is to just get started.
