4 Creative Rio Olympics Marketing Campaigns for the Gold!

Fastest Man on Earth, Emoji Style

Puma released “The world’s fastest emojis” on the app store to help give our texts, tweets and IG captions some Olympic spirit. The emoji’s feature Usain Bolt who is still the world’s fastest person. The keyboard is compatible with iMessage, Android, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and more. Puma has been a long time sponsor of Bolt so this was a fun way to celebrate his latest Olympics run.

  • Bolt will be attempting to defend his three Olympic gold medals in Brazil, as he aims for victory in the 100 and 200 meters as well as the 4x100m relay.
  • Apple and Android will be releasing an additional 72 Olympic-themed icons just in time for Rio.
  • Most of the emojis heavily feature the Jamaican flag and the Puma logo, as well as Bolt’s famous victory pose.

Payment with your Fingertips

Visa is premiering it’s smart payment ring at the Rio Olympics and the Olympians will be sporting the high tech accessory. Olympians inspired the creation of the payment ring. Gabby Douglas and Team USA have no time for a wallet when they’re constantly changing in and out of uniform. Visa is giving out its payments ring to 45 athletes heading to the Rio 2016 Olympics and we aren’t sure if and when it will be available to the public. And for Phelps’ crew the ring is also water resistant to 50 meters and never needs charging.

Rio is in Love with the Coco

Local businesses are getting involved in the Olympic marketing magic, albeit illegal. Police in Rio seized 93 bags of powder cocaine featuring the Olympic rings and insignia for the Rio Games. Police recovered 28 bags of crack cocaine according to Oglobo.com. I suppose they were looking to be the official Coco sponsor of the Olympic games. The crafty packaging also included a warning to not use the contents around children.

Lays Worldwide Flavor Tour

“While most of us can’t just hop on a plane, all of us can travel through our taste buds,” said Jeannie Cho, vice president of Frito-Lay marketing. “The Passport to Flavor program invites consumers to try four delicious new global flavors.” Thanks to Lay’s the less fortunate can experience some of the splendor of nations and cultures uniting…in an effort to prove athletic dominance.
