How to Bring your Social Media Strategy to the 21st Century

The 21st century is the digital age of social media and technology. In the past 16 years Marketing and PR reps have had to revamp the focus of global communications and strategic outreach to keep up. Posters and advertisements on park benches just don’t cut it anymore. Brands have begun to adopt new and exciting tactics that are more relevant in this fast-paced time.

Here are four innovative social media strategies used to transform brand visibility:

1. Commercializing Social Media

Social media engines offer maximum potential for outreach. Think about how many times you log into Facebook a day. Now think about how many advertisements pop up once you scroll down your newsfeed. So, take advantage of social media advertising! Place your product/brands ads in places where users are guaranteed to click on the link and read more. Successful promotion now involves promoting a product through paid Facebook advertisements, YouTube commercials and sponsored Twitter ads.

2. Telling a Story

Everyone, and I mean everyone loves a good story. You might read hundreds, or thousands, of articles, blog posts, news reports, etc. a day. But you’re only going to remember reading the posts that told a memorable story. The most successful stories are the ones that  resonate with you.

Your business writing should contain engaging content for readers with short attention spans. For example, Buzzfeed.com reaches 80 million viewers a month, while the NYtimes.com only reaches 20 million viewers a month. What’s the reason for Buzzfeed’s success? The answer: short, creative and relevant stories that keep readers entertained, attentive and begging for more.

When writing you must keep information posted through press releases, newsletters and blog content “short and sweet”. No one has time to read an essay or dissertation. It’s important to focus on a specific valuable asset or topic and promote an interactive, interesting story.

3. Think like a Journalist

“Just Do It!”- Nike; “The Real Thing!”- Coca Cola; “Once you pop you can’t stop!”- Pringles… three popular brand slogans everyone knows and loves. Slogans and headlines are just as important, if not more important, as the content in a piece of writing. The headline will garner a click through, retweet, like or share. One “catchy” tagline or phrase can be virally shared through Twitter and Facebook. An awesome slogan is able to express a complex integrated concept in just a few words.

You can successfully attract the public with a professional and well-thought-out headline that will convey your brand’s value proposition in a single sentence or idea. The slogan should be brief and memorable- easily recognized in advertisements, commercials, business cards, Youtube videos, etc. People can become invested in a campaign that showcases logos and forms an emotional reaction. Then you have them hooked!

4. Promote your Pics

The 21st century marks the time for a visual virtual world, and every picture counts. The saying is true, “a picture is worth a 1000 words” or in this case a picture is worth 1000 re-tweets or 1000 memes on Facebook. You can utilize a brand’s image to tell the story behind the campaign. Image captions are beneficial to SEO strategy. They increase the visibility of the content throughout the internet. Images increase engagement on posts. All content should have images to break up the text and social media posts should have an image to entice a click through.
