Why I Stopped Following the Kardashians on Social Media

Selfie. Selfie. Product Placement. Usie. Selfie.

The Kardashian family dominates most social media platforms, but their posts are almost always repetitive day to day. In a world where social platforms like Twitter and Instagram are used to communicate and promote brands, the art of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” is becoming overplayed. Even though all the Kardashian sisters rank within the twenty-five most followed people on Instagram, followers crave quality content, not airbrushed duck-face selfies and “shock factor” photoshoot reveals. Here’s how to get real and engaged followers without having to “Keep Up with the Kardashians”.

1. Put Your Photoshop App to Rest — Be Real.

Everyone loves a good selfie (am I right?), but there reaches a point where enough is ENOUGH. Let go of the photo editing apps and embrace your natural beauty. In order to communicate authenticity to your followers, it is crucial to not be an over-glossed version of yourself in every image you release. The Kardashian sisters, particularly Kim and Khloe, have been criticized numerous times for their overuse of photoshop in their Instagram photos. In the photo below, Kim Kardashian and future sister-in-law Blac Chyna, touched up their photo to make themselves look thinner in the waist and curvier through the hips — check out the warps in the floor! There’s no shame in using a filter to give your own photos just the right look, but it’s nonsense to change your entire appearance. Your followers follow you, because they want to see YOU!

2. Share What You Know, But Don’t Over Share.

When you use your personal Instagram to promote products, make sure you create a post that communicates your passion for the product! Don’t fall victim to a copy and paste flub like Scott Disick did when promoting a line of protein shakes. Be honest with your followers by sharing products you enjoy, rather than banking on pay days for sponsored posts. Do not get lost in the business side of self-promotion and forfeit the special connections you can make with your followers. For example, Kylie Jenner uses her personal Instagram frequently to promote her line of lip products, but she makes sure to make her photos feel personal by hosting giveaways for fans and sharing special snapshots of her family and friends wearing her products.

3. Don’t Lose Your Personal Social Image To Your Professional Persona.

A personal Instagram page should be just that, PERSONAL! The best way to connect with followers is to share content that communicates who you are as an influencer, both personally and professionally. Although branding yourself does involve including the companies you work with or for, you can still add a personal twist to communicate your personality! Posting a variety of photos including, throwbacks, your favorite meal, snapshots with family and friends, and you guessed it, even SELFIES. A variation in images gives your following a chance to see the real you instead of a tailored reel of ads in their feed. By establishing a personal connection with your followers, you build invaluable trust. Take a note from Kendall Jenner, who had the most liked photo of 2015 with this creative shot. She was able to mix it up with a silly shot of her heart shaped hair amongst her other posts of modeling ads.
