How Celebrities Are Using Award Shows to Bring Issues Center Stage

Alongside the red-carpet looks, celebrity gossip, and the awards themselves, speeches at award shows can often steal the spotlight. Award shows bring together influencers from all industries. Activists, politicians, actors/actresses, filmmakers, artists, and musicians gather together to celebrate major moments in their various fields, and many take advantage of the powerful audience reach to talk about much more than just what they are wearing.

Red carpet commentaries and award speeches have the opportunity to be very controversial. This year with so much talk around the lack of diversity at the Academy Awards, we are seeing now more than ever how speeches and commentaries have the power to bring influence and awareness.

During the Oscars Red Carpet, one of the newest members of the Academy, Kerry Washington, gave a riveting speech on the lack of the diversity at the Oscars. She emphasized how she wanted to be apart of the integral conversation that evokes institutional change. While introducing The Weekend at the awards, Kevin Hart also used the platform to comment on the controversial subject, as well. Last year at the Academy Awards, Patricia Arquette spoke on wage equality for “every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation.” That same year actor Graham Moore gave a powerful speech on suicide and homosexuality. Even organizations such as the Representation Project have gone as far to create movements such as the #AskHerMore campaign to put an end to sexist questions asked towards women on the red carpet.

Speeches are powerful vehicles that celebrities and influencers can use for incredible impact. The Oscars alone brought in around 34 million viewers and social media impressions. These numbers show just how much reach and influence these speeches can have over audiences worldwide. Speeches establish trust and evoke emotion in audiences which makes for compelling and impactful influence.
