Technology Transforming the Beauty Industry

The beauty industry is transforming, thanks to technological innovations that allow consumers to self-educate and self-treat hair, skin, and makeup issues at home. These gadgets seem straight from the future and are sure to make your life easier, although we must warn you that none of these gadgets will help you achieve the perfect winged eyeliner *sigh*.

L’Oreal’s chief retail officer, Alexandre Risch, attributes consumer empowerment to the surge of technology in they beauty sphere. Since the customer journey no longer ends at the point of purchase, beauty brands of all sizes have introduced diverse forms of technology to keep their customers involved with the brand after buying an item: “It’s about engagement with the brands… it’s about the lifetime value of your customers,” says Risch. Not only does technology engage users, but it also enables a more customized experience. Technology that can suggest the perfect products to your unique features adds value to the shopping experience, pre and post purchase. This technology is sure to keep you engaged with brands, especially thanks to apps that allow you to play digital makeup artist.

Check out some of the most notable technological innovations that are disrupting the beauty industry:

1. Smart Mirrors like HiMirror and ModiFace are transforming the way we think about makeup. HiMirror can be purchased for your home and does everything from analyze your skin, track skin’s progress, track product use and even provide diverse lighting scenarios (such as a dinner party or the office) so that you can perfect your skin and makeup routine. ModiFace is the secret behind AR makeup modules, used on e-commerce sites, and in-store magic mirror software, like Sephora’s, that enables you to try on makeup, record makeup sessions, and find correct shades.

2. KÉRASTASE aka the first award-winning “smartbrush” will help provide some pretty serious care for your hair. The waterproof brush trains users to brush hair gently, uses microphones to record dry, damaged, or frizzy hair, and has sensors to track the effects of heat and products on your hair. Your results, along with customized product and technique recommendations, can be found in the mobile app. The brush also predicts possible effects that the weather (humidity, wind, temperature) will have on your hair — we’re no experts, but we’re pretty willing to bet most of these effects are frizz, frizz, and more ~frizz~.

3. Skin Hydration Meter, H2O+, measures the moisture in your skin and then suggests which products to use. After application, re-measure hydration levels to see them rise and use the app to track daily progress.

These products help to enhance beauty from the inside out. Using products like smart mirrors or hydration meters can help educate users about how to better care for their skin and adjust makeup products accordingly. The same goes for hair care. Technology and beauty are becoming ever more intertwined and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
