Media Kits: What They Are and Why You Should Have One

If you’ve never heard of a little thing called a “media kit,” the term can be somewhat intimidating. But, have no fear, we’re here help you understand exactly how to craft an effective media kit of your own and just how important this so-called kit can be for an influencer.

What is a Media Kit

via canva.com

A media kit is a document that provides information about yourself and your personal brand to potential clients. Basically, it should contain all the information that a potential client may need to know about you and can range from a single page to a multiple page document (usually a PDF). Think of it as a kind of tell-all infographic about yourself and your brand. A good media kit should help clients learn about you (and why you’re great!), your service offerings, pricing and any other information you feel relevant. Media kits can be publicly posted on one’s website, or can be privately distributed on request depending on your brand and industry.

What should my media kit include?

As an influencer, there is a lot of information about you that clients will be curious to know. Your media kit is the perfect place to fill them in on your achievements and the value of your services. There is no singular template to create a media kit with (although there are plenty of sites like Canva that sell templates if you need a little help!), so get creative and tailor yours to your own style – remember that this document is a representation of you and a testament to your professionalism. Consider including the following elements to make your media kit impress:

  1. Biography: Give your clients a brief biography to let them really feel like they know you. Include any passions, skills and achievements you think would catch their attention. Don’t forget to explain your brand, how it’s grown and its specific mission or mantra.
  2. Key Statistics: Numbers, numbers, numbers! In business, nothing speaks louder than numbers, so you definitely want to highlight your best digits. Statistics such as readership on blogs or email subscriptions are relevant to clients, but are not public knowledge so be sure to call those out. Other “hidden” statistics to share include story and live feature views, participation in giveaways and how long your followers subscribe to your content. Including rates on follower growth and engagement over time proves your success and authority in the industry, so start tracking that if you’re not already!
  3. User Demographics: Another element “hidden” to the public is who you’re reaching as an influencer. What types of people are subscribing to your content? How old are they? Where are they from? Showcasing your followers’ demographics will enable clients to compare them to their own target market and evaluate if your services are a good fit for their needs. Tools such as Google Analytics, YouTube Analytics, SumAll and plenty of others (even free or inexpensive apps!) can help you find this information.
  4. Services Examples and Offerings: Here is your chance to highlight what you do and why you’re proud of it! Include photos, links and any other applicable media to let your clients see what it is that you do everyday and successful past projects. You can also include and idea of your rates here – no one likes a surprise – but always remember to be flexible and reasonable! Lastly, any impressive testimonials from past clients can be included for an added element of validation.
  5. Processes: Give a brief description of how your process works: if the client employs you, what will that process and timeline look like? This can be as detailed or general as you like, just remember to keep it realistic.
  6. Contact Info and Social Platforms: This can be included in the biography area or in its own separate space. This part is vital so make it stand out and remember to hyperlink!

Media kits are becoming a necessity for your brand in the same way a resume is for a job. As an influencer, media kits showcase a level of professionalism and answer key questions about your brand. Though it may take you some time to create and perfect your own media kit, the process will help you to evaluate your worth and create new opportunities for your business. Once your media kit is complete, keeping it up to date will be key. Set regular reminders in your calendar to update stats every few months and add new work examples. The benefits that media kits can bring, especially in the form of attracting new clients, will certainly pay off.
