Making the Most of your Posts: Expert Social Media Management Tips

We’ve all had this happen – You spend 20 minutes standing on a chair in the middle of a coffee shop endlessly rearranging the space between your deliberately draped headphones and steaming chai latte to snap the perfect flat lay ‘gram (with the ideal amount of sun glare in the background, mind you). It’s edited to a dreamy state and posted with a short, witty caption. It’s a stunner of a post. But then… just a handful of likes and comments come in. What gives?

Winning at social media can seem impossible at times. A terribly shot video of someone falling off a skateboard can literally break the internet with zero effort, while shots that take months of strategies, money and hashtag deliberation completely flop. The constant algorithm changes (thanks, Instagram) can make even the techiest of tech heads spin and followers are becoming pickier with those double taps as their feeds are flooded with content. Whether you’re a brand or an influencer, you have to keep up with the constant changes to truly engage your followers and slacking on your social strategy is not going to fly.

Luckily, here at LMS, we have social media superstars who have their fingers to the pulse of every platform. Our social team has transformed our clients’ accounts like @chefscutjerky and @good_culture (yes, that’s a cottage cheese brand and it’s feed is better than yours) through strategic practices to create killer content and exponentially increase followings and engagement. They’re a pretty nice bunch, so they’ve agreed to share some of their industry know-how with you!

Read on as LMS Social Media Manager, Kelly Shogren, shares her top tips on how to effectively manage accounts to create growth, loyalty and revenue. Here’s her expert advice:

On Posting

How often should someone post? Does it vary depending on platform?

Posting cadence definitely depends on the platform. However, the platform that it has the most significant impact on is Instagram. Too much posting on Instagram can lead to fatigue from followers and ultimately result in loss of followers. Posting once a day, five times a week is a recommended cadence that will yield high engagement. On the other platforms, posting multiple times a day is accepted and won’t lead to follower loss.

When creating a social media calendar, what days or times are best for engagement?

The best time to post will be different for every account based on their followers. There are countless analytic softwares that can shine a light on your best times to post. We like, UNUM, Planoly, and Iconosquare. As a best practice, 9am during the week is a known active hour on social- people on their way to work or just getting to work are going to be checking their social. Additionally, Sunday evenings are a popular time for e-commerce, so posting then help promote sales.

On Content

Which types of posts are most effective in encouraging engagement?

Generally speaking, lifestyle and relatable quotes will perform the best. Specifically within lifestyle, food, babies, and dogs do especially well. Cute pups, gooey cheese = winners.

Do you think the picture or the copy promote more engagement?

The picture 100%. If the picture isn’t eye-catching enough people will not stop scrolling fast enough to read the copy.

How do you create captions that promote engagement?

Humor, puns, and relatable quotes are always a good go-to for high engagement. Additionally, telling an authentic story or tidbit about the brand/yourself can generate a lot of engagement and responses.

On Growth

What are specific ways of increasing growth on social media?

Being a first mover on the new features as they launch is one of the best ways to consistently increase growth. Instagram’s algorithm will favor the accounts that are using the new features and your content will get served higher in your followers feed and you have a greater chance of making it on the explore page. Additionally, loop giveaways (in which participants have to follow multiple accounts for entry) are always a great way to gain exposure to a new audience and ultimately increase growth. Lastly, regularly engaging with your audience and being responsive to comments and questions will show potential followers that there’s value in following your account and ultimately encourage them to hit that follow button.

Does featuring influencers or celebrities on a brand’s account attribute to growth? What are some tips to integrate influencers within the brand’s feed?

Featuring an influencer or celebrity could lead to some growth, but it’s actually not as much of a growth driver as you might expect. The best tip to integrate influencers posts within the brand’s feed is to use the photos that fit the aesthetic and emulate the brand vibe.

That’s all the LMS magic we can share for today –  anymore and you’ll at least have to take us out to dinner. Now get out there and better your feeds!
